Eligibility Criteria

On 12th April, 1957 - Ternopil State Medical University was established in the city of Ternopil. The university was established by the orders of the Ukrainian government, after the 2nd World War from the ruins and named as Ternopil Medical Institute.


On 1st July 1992, the institute was named after Ivan Horbachevsky to honour his contribution to the field of medicine, primarily bio-chemistry. On 30th December 1997, the institute was honoured with the status of a State Medical Academy and named as I. Horbachevsky Ternopil State Medical Academy. Furthermore, on 17th November 2004 the institution was accredited with the title of State Medical University and began to popularly known as I.H.Ternopil State Medical University.


The University developed programs and facilities as it grew along with the years, but the biggest change took place after Ukraine has got its independence in the year 1991. In the year 1994, TSMA received 4th level of accreditation from the Ukrainian government and is counted among the premier medical universities of Ukraine. By each passing year, TSMU became more independent and started offering courses in nursing, pharmacy and many other subjects. 1 Medical Faculty

The faculty consists of 38 departments including 23 clinical and 15 theoretical divisions.
In these departments, there are 5 fundamental profiles, 4 humanitarian and socio-economic profiles and 31 are professionally oriented.
Also, there are 469 teachers in the department including 269 professors, 336 have a medical degree out of which 67 are the candidates of science, 4 honored scientist and technician of Ukraine.

2 Dentistry Faculty

The faculty of Dentistry was established at VNMU in the year 1994.
The Ministry of Education accredited the licensed admission to the first year with 120 number of students.
During the first 4 years of Dentistry, the departments taught are therapeutic dentistry, pediatric dentistry, surgical stomatology, orthopedic stomatology.
Postolovskaya T.T. was the first Dean appointed to Dentistry faculty from 1994 onwards.

3 Pharmaceutical Faculty

The Pharmaceutical faculty have 300 students in the field of clinical pharmacy from various countries abroad.

Higher State Educational Establishment of Ukraine “Bukovinian State Medical University” (BSMU) is one of the largest higher educational establishments in Chernivtsi. Practical training. The University students go through their practical training at medical-preventive establishments and pharmacies (practical bases) in Chernivtsi, Khmelnitsky regions, or at their places of residence.

In 2019 the Center of Simulation Medicine and Innovation Technologies was founded at the University, which provides learning and mastering practical skills of students, interns and medical practitioners. The Center is equipped with up-to-date simulation devices: robots-simulators of adults and newborns, obstetrical and gynecological simulators, training devices for mastering skills of auscultation, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, giving injections, mannequins for taking care of a newborn, etc. Robots-simulators enable to reconstruct maximum real different clinical situations and train doctor’s tactics, consistency of his actions, ensure mastering skills of leadership and team work. Simulation trainings are organized on the basis of the Center for future doctors involving standard patients and actors in order to simulate real situations and creation of a direct contact and communication with “real patients”.

Educational-producing chemist is established for the students of pharmaceutical faculty, where students get the opportunity to acquire knowledge and abilities, train practical skills directly at a working place under conditions close to the real ones.

Post-graduate education is implemented on 26 Departments of Medical, Pharmaceutical and Stomatological Faculties. 40 basic therapeutic and 14 pharmaceutical institutions are used for distance learning in Internship.

Every year primary specialization in Internship is implemented on 23 basic specialties in the field of “Medicine” and 1 basic specialty in the area of “Pharmacy”. Usually more than  700 interns study at the University.

Physicians and pharmacists are trained at advanced courses at BSMU on 30 specialties.

Students’ self-government. The organs of the students’ self-government include the students’ bureau of the course, students’ dean’s offices of every faculty, students’ councils of the hostels, and the University Students’ Council. The decisions of the University Students’ Council are of a consultative character.

The highest body of the Students’ Council at BSMU is the Students’ Conference of the University. 1 delegate out of 12 students is elected to take part at the Conference. The Students’ Conference approves the Status of the students’ self-government; elects the executive body – the Students’ University Council and considers the account on its activities; defines the structure, the powers and procedure for electing Students’ Council of the University, the term of its activity.

Fundamental and clinical scientific studies are conducted at the University, educational and informational technologies are introduced. The Young Scientists’ Council and Students’ Scientific Society play an important role in the organization of scientific work.

Admission Procedure


STEP 1. Before applying to the University, you need to choose a course and get more information about academic curriculum, languages of instruction, scientific research options and other issues related to your future studies. STEP 2. Check your compliance with the minimal entrance requirements.

STEP 3. Fill in the application form and send it to the Department of International Relations ( You can either apply online, or download the application form at this Web-page below.

STEP 4. Within 3 working days you will get feedback from the Department of International Relations, regarding your eligibility. In case you are eligible for admission, you will be asked to send on the e-mail scanned copies of the following documents:

  • passport page with personal details (or other identity document),
  • document of previous education with list of disciplines studied and grades received or official transcript, translated into English, Russian or Ukrainian,
  • signed consent to personal data collection and processing (it can be downloaded at this Web-page below).

STEP 5. The admission board will review your documents and decide on the possibility of inviting you for studies. You will get feedback within 5 working days. In case of a positive decision, the Department of International relations will issue you an official Invitation for Study and send you its scanned copy.

STEP 6. On receiving the invitation letter, you will be asked to do the following payments:

  •           visa support fee of 324 UAH (bank details will be provided);
  •       courier delivery service (any courier post which you arrange to deliver you the original of the Invitation letter needed for getting student visa);
  • 20-50% of tuition fee (as a proof of your motivation to come to Ukraine with aim of receiving higher education).

STEP 7. After receiving the original of the invitation letter, you can start preparing all necessary documents for getting a student visa. You can do it either with the help of our representatives, or without any help by contacting the Embassy of Ukraine in your country of residence. Visa requirements can be found at the Web-site of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine:

STEP 8. As soon as you get a student visa you need to start arranging your travel to Chernivtsi. Keep in mind that you should inform the Department of International Relations about the date, time, number of flight, city of arriving to Ukraine at least 7 days before the arriving date. The Department of International Relations will then prepare a special “letter for meeting” which is to be sent to migration authorities for facilitating the process of crossing Ukrainian border. Without this letter you might be forbidden to enter Ukraine.

STEP 9. Come to Chernivtsi, pass entrance tests, and become our student!

Documents Required for Admission

Foreign citizens have to submit the following documents:

  1. Completed application form.
  2. A copy of the document of education with the list of studied courses (subjects) and received grades (points) – high secondary school diploma and transcripts or college/university diploma and transcripts.
  3. A copy of the passport.
  4. The medical certificate of the state of health certified by an official health care authority of a country, where a foreigner has come from, and issued at least two months prior to the entrance into Ukraine for education.
  5. The document evidencing the absence of HIV-infection, unless otherwise for by international agreements of Ukraine.
  6. The insurance policy for emergency medical care (except for foreigners arrived from countries, with which agreements on free provision of emergency medical care are concluded).
  7. A copy of the birth certificate.
  8. 6 photographs having the size of 6×4 cm.
  9. Original and a copy of the document, which contains information about the content of the curriculum by previous higher education level, credits received, length of study and academic achievement (in the absence of this information in the annex to the educational document), when applying for master’s degree or postgraduate education, if the lack of this information makes it impossible to carry out the recognition of qualification on the document.
  10. Air ticket with an open date for the applicant’s return to his/her home country.

The above mentioned documents must be in the English, Ukrainian or Russian languages, and documents № 2, 4, 5, 7 shall, in addition, be certified pursuant to the legislation of a country of their origin and legalized pursuant to the established order, unless otherwise provided for by international agreements of Ukraine.
